Larrier's Cooking Club - January 2013

Today in cooking club we made chocolate chip cookies.  I really enjoyed the mixing.  I cracked an egg for the first time and was so glad that I got no egg shell in the cookie mix.  We made loads of cookies so we were able to give some to the senior boys who were having a meeting about their French trip, Úna said they loved them.  

 

I like cooking, my favourite thing to cook at home is the “Karl Bag of Wonder”, it’s my own secret recipe, you put everything you love into a tortilla wrap, and fold it tight like a bag – everyone I’ve made it for says it’s delicious.

I really enjoyed making the cookies today, I used a big knife to carefully cut all the chocolate into small pieces.  I also helped cut the dough into cookies and put them on the baking tray.

We made a mistake by putting all the cookie pieces too close together on the baking tray so when they cooked the mixture spread out and stuck together.  Then instead of 12 small cookies there was one giant cookie BUT this wasn’t a mistake for me, we had made a GIANT PIZZA COOKIE, it was brilliant!  When I make the cookies at home with my Ma I’m definitely going to make this mistake again.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Makes 10

§  75g of dark chocolate (or use a mixture of what you have at home)

§  110g butter
§  110g caster sugar
§  1 egg yolk
§  125g self raising flour

 Equipment:      Baking tray, 2 sheets of greaseproof paper, chopping board, knife, fork,

sieve, mixing bowl, wooden spoon and oven gloves.

1.      Carefully chop the chocolate into small chunks and leave to one side.

2.      Beat the butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl with a wooden spoon until light and creamy, then mix in the egg yolk. 

3.      Sift the flour onto the butter and sugar,  using a fork bring together to a soft dough.

4.      Carefully mix in the chocolate chunks.
5.      Dust one piece of greaseproof paper with flour and turn the cookie dough onto it.  Shape into a cylinder and place in the fridge to firm up (this takes about 30 minutes).
6.      When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 170⁰c/Gas mark 3.  Take the dough from the fridge and cut into slices about 1cm thick.  Place on the baking sheet leaving plenty of room for the cookies to spread out.
7.      Bake for 20 minutes until the cookies are just turning golden brown.
8.      Transfer these to a wire rack and leave to cool.

The Boxing Exhibition, National Stadium, Tuesday, 12th December, 2012

On December 12th all the Larriers went on tour to the Nationl Stadium to cheer on our lads in the IABA/DCC Dublin Primary Schools Boxing Exhibition. It was a great day out with some super bouts. Our boxers even got to have Olympic gold medal boxing legend Michael Carruth as a corner man!

Well done to the five Larrier legends Cian, Dylan, Johnny, Dillon and Kian who fought on the day and collected their Gold Boxing Award Certificates and gold medals.

Well done also to the thirty plus  Larriers who completed the Bronze Boxing Certificate back in September/October and those who contiued and achieved the Silver Certificate in November. Many will be back to go for gold next September.

Our sincere thanks to Paul Quinn, Paddy, Michael Carruth and all the IABA/DCC team for this super initiative. We especially thank them for the opportunity the lads trying for the Gold Certificate got to train at Ireland's High Performance Boxing Gym and to meet and watch our Olympic Boxing heros in training. 

Some day it could be us!

A special word of thanks to Dublin Bus, especially Eugene and Mark, who always get us there and back again and without whom there would be no Larriers on Tour at all.

Larriers Boxing Team 2012

Well done to all the lads on the Larriers Boxing Team who participated in the DCC/IABA Silver Award programme over the last four weeks. Seven of the team will now progress to the Gold Award training over the four Tuesdays of November at the High Performance Gym. See Lee's report here.

Zombies on the Yard

Sixth class have been very busy this month getting their new short film ready for Halloween. They put together a storyboard consisting of twelve scenes. Filming took a week and most scenes where done in one or two takes.

Well done to everyone involved. Now sit back and enjoy 'Zombies on the Yard'

Sunflower Competition 2012

Mr Bailey has been busy doing the rounds in search of this year's winner of the 'Larriers Sunflower Competition 2012'. The results are in with a clear winner.

In first place - Cian from sixth class managed a height of 81"!! Inside info from his brother revealed that his ma moved the pot around the garden to where the best light was. Well done Cian's ma.

In second place Cian from third class managed a height of 49".

Third place goes to Johnny Sunner from fifth class with a height of 41.5"

Congratulations lads and well done to all the larriers who took on the sunflower challenge.

Boxing Bronze Award October 2012

This is a photostory of the 4th, 5th and 6th class Larriers participating in the Dublin City Council Boxing in the Community Bronze Award. We did the boxing coaching in the yard every Thursday from the second week of September to the first week of October. Well done to all the lads and our thanks, once again, to DCC/IABA coaches Paul and Paddy who do deadly coaching. Ten of the lads have signed up for the Silver Award Programme to be held in Ballybough Community Centre with the lads from Joeys, Fairview. The Silver Award programme is on each Tuesday of October starting on the 9th. Go on the Larrier Legends!

Homework Clubs 2012 -2013

This year there are two homework clubs, a Junior Homework Club for 2nd and 3rd class pupils and a Senior Homework Club for 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils.

The Junior Homework Club is supervised by 3rd class teacher, Susan, 2nd class teacher, Maeve and SNAs Lynsey and Helen. The Junior Homework Club is on every week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. One teacher and one SNA take the club on Mondays and Wednesdays, the other teacher and SNA take the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The club runs from 2.30pm - 3.10 pm each day. Pupils wishing to take part in the club must fill an application form (available from the office). All pupils must bring their library book to read when they finish their homework.

The Junior Homework Club provides a quiet and supportive environment for pupils to complete homework, with help available if needed. It also provides a training in good work and study habits for pupils.

It is not the responsibility of those supervising the Junior Homework Club to check that a pupil attending has all his homework completed correctly. Therefore parents/guardians need to continue do the following:

• check that the homework is completed,
• listen to your son reading each evening,
• sign his homework journal.

The Senior Homework Club follows the same approach as the Junior Homework Club, outlined above except for the following points:

It is supervised by Mark (Principal) and is on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday. It runs from 2.30 - 3.15 pm (though some 6th class pupils choose to stay until 3.30 or 3.45 pm to complete homework). From January 2013 the club runs from 2.30 - 3.30 pm for all pupils. On the occasions where Mark is unavailable the club is supervised by Barry (Deputy Principal).

There is no application for the Senior Homework Club. As many pupils are engaged in other after-school activities, both at school and in the community,  all 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils are welcome to attend if and when they feel they would benefit from the club.

However, in instances where a non-homework club attending pupil is not completing homework satisfactorily he will be required to attend the club to assist him reach the expected standard. Parents/guardians will be consulted in such instances. Parents/guardians may also request that their son attend the Senior Homework Club.

Different views abound in educational circles on the usefulness or otherwise of homework. In Larriers we believe that learning how to study and how to do homework properly, while in primary school,  is something of a necessary evil to meet the demands of second level education. Rightly or wrongly (and I think wrongly) how well a young person today does in the Leaving Certificate has a major impact on the quality of life s/he can expect to have thereafter. It's a bad game, but we have to get better at it. Put simply, the better our lads can do the homework now, the better they'll get on in the long run. 

Over the last decade almost all aspects of our school have improved significantly, to the benefit of our pupils and the community. Getting the Homework Policy right, however, is one of our remaining challenges.  It is for this reason that we have now decided to commit significant time, energy and resources from our after-school activities to meeting this challenge.

What type of book is it? This is a mythological book.
What is it about? This book is about Harry Potter, a wizard and his arch enemy Voldemort is back. Also, Harry has to hunt for horcruxes and someone like a father to Harry dies.
The best bit was... when Harry and Dumbledore were in a cave and skeletons started to come from water. They try to kill them but Dumbledore got his wand and burnt everything except for him and Harry.
